Andrew Lyons
Andrew Lyons
"I feel that my illustrations are the sum of my influences: mid-century abstract painting, French comic books and listening to early jazz music"
Bio.
Andrew Lyons is an illustrator who depicts optimistic scenes of leisure and life, using cool, calm, colour palettes. His subject matter often focuses on the more pleasant aspects of life on planet earth.
His confident style has an understated elegance to it - perhaps owing to his love of old Tintin comics, and really anything vintage. He's trained as a painter, a keen folk musician and his work is often infused with French influences, having spent many years living there.
Notable clients include Penguin, Mercedes-Benz, Wall Street Journal, GQ, United Airlines, Wired and Google.
Andrew's Process
Process: Step 1.
Andrew begins by researching the visual elements required in the illustration along with writing out concepts and sketching compositions. He then sends the client neatened pencils sketches drawn in Photoshop for approval.

Process: Step 2.
The second stage is all about considering which colours are needed. Sometimes the client has brand colours or a suggested palette but often Andrew will be left to decide which colours to use. He’ll be thinking about how the colours can affect the tone of the piece, the composition and who the intended audience for the work will be when making these decisions.
Andrew's Process
Process: Step 3.
When the sketch has been approved Andrew starts the final illustration in more nuanced colours. He uses his sketch as a guide to trace the work in finer detail in Photoshop and he always works in layers, keeping every element of the illustration file fully editable for the client to request any changes where needed.
