Bio.

Molly McCammon is an illustrator hailing from Dundee, Scotland. Hugely inspired by mid-century design and printing methods, Molly’s work utilises texture and simplicity with structure and geometry. With a nod to Picasso’s cubism, her work has a warm nostalgia feel fused with a contemporary style.

Her process always begins with a pencil. Working by hand initially to get all the “bad ideas” out on paper, before taking the good stuff to Procreate. Flat layers of colour are then used to recreate the traditional screen-printing methods of the 50's and 60's picture books and advertising campaigns that she loves.

When she’s not drawing (still her favourite pastime, as well as her job), Molly can be found trawling the second hand bookshops of Dundee looking for treasure or talking walks along the North Sea.

Molly is one of our Handsome Future selects for 2024, an initiative we set up to identify and develop emerging talents in the illustration world. Over the next 12 months we’ll be working closely with Molly to help develop her portfolio and unlock her huge potential as artist.

Process: Step 1.

Working digitally, Molly's sketches take form by reducing the subjects to geometric forms. From an early stage, Molly works with her own signature procreate brush that captures the essence of her inky paintings.

Molly's approach to design, which involves using a limited color palette and emphasisng mid-century design harmonies and tones, creates a distinctive and visually appealing aesthetic. By minimising linework and relying on negative space, her designs evoke a sense of simplicity and elegance, characteristic of mid-century modernism.

Finally, Molly introduces textures and grain, which gives her illustrations a worn-in look reminiscent of found mid-century artwork. The textures replicate the subtle imperfections and tactile quality of vintage prints, while the grain provides a visual roughness that enhances the overall aesthetic.
